Every distinct English word the King James Version uses to translate this Greek term. The variety shows what readers in English receive across many different surface words — the same underlying word, scattered across the English Bible under different names.

What the first audience heard

The Greek word ἀποκάλυψις (apokalypsis) means unveiling — the pulling back of a curtain so that something hidden can be seen. It names a gesture, and from that gesture it came to name an entire genre of Jewish writing: apocalyptic literature, the texts that present themselves as the disclosure of heavenly realities to a chosen visionary. Enoch ascends into the heavens; Daniel is shown the rise and fall of empires; Ezra is given a tour of the cosmic future; John on Patmos sees the throne and the lamb. The visionary sees what God sees, and the reader, looking over his shoulder, sees it too.

This matters for reading Jesus because Jesus did not invent the vocabulary of his harder sayings. He inherited it. By the time he stood on a Galilean hillside, Jewish writers had been developing this kind of speech for roughly two hundred years — Daniel, parts of 1 Enoch, 4 Ezra, 2 Baruch, the scrolls from Qumran. The genre had its own conventions, its own stock vocabulary, and a body of texts the first audience would have been steeped in. When Jesus spoke of harvest and furnace and the age to come, his hearers did not encounter exotic riddles. They encountered something familiar, the way a modern listener recognizes the conventions of a courtroom drama or a country song.

The conventions apokalypsis carries are worth naming, because Jesus’s vocabulary assumes them. Two ages: this present, fallen era and the age to come that breaks in when God acts. Standardized imagery: harvest meant the eschatological gathering; fire meant judgment; the furnace meant catastrophic purgation; trumpet meant the heralding of God’s decisive action. Vindication: the genre exists, at its core, to say that the righteous who appear to be losing will in fact be raised, gathered, seated at the feast. When Jesus says the harvest is the end of the age and the harvesters are angels, or speaks of this age and the age to come as if no explanation is needed, he is using the genre’s working grammar — and re-centering it on himself.

Knowing the genre does not soften Jesus’s hard sayings; it makes them more legible, not less. The modern reader is often offered a false choice: flatten the imagery into a literal timetable, or dismiss it as ancient decoration. The first audience did neither. They heard a charged, conventional, world-shaking register — hope under pressure — and let it do what it was built to do. To recover apokalypsis is to recover the ear they brought to it.
